Every city has a repertoire of coffee shops, and as a longtime resident of Strasbourg, I consider it somethig of a personal mission to stay on top of the latest options. This guide is written with visitors and new residents alike to help you discover the best coffee shops in Strasbourg, depending on your needs.
As a self-employed person who works online, I also understand that not all coffee spots were created with remote work in mind — and that’s completely OK! Sometimes you need Wifi, other times you’d happily chuck your laptop in the canal if it meant you could sit in peace on a sunny terrace with a latte. I have been both of these people.
In noting an overall list of places I have personally gone for coffee in Strasbourg, I’ll also include notes on logistics such as opening hours and which places are nice to work from based on my experiences to date.
A quick aside on working out of coffee shops in Strasbourg
I do follow a self-imposed common courtesy rule, which is to avoid working from coffee shops during lunch hours (noon-2:00 pm). I do this because high-traffic hours are when these places make the most of their money, typically by offering a menu du jour. Additionally, keep an eye out for posted guidance on working on laptops. Some places will put a little sign in their front window or ordering station noting if working from a laptop is permitted, and on which days. When in doubt, ask! (Tip: It helps to lead with, “I’d like to buy a coffee and a snack and work for an hour or so, is that OK?” In French, I would ask it like, “Bonjour (with a small smile, not too big). Je veux bien prendre un café et quelque chose à manger pendant que je fais un peu de travail, c’est OK pour vous?“
Typically, the smaller and more cramped the space, the less receptive they’ll be to a laptop working request, unless it’s truly dead inside (i.e., there’s minimal foot traffic). I also try to limit work sessions to around 2.5 hours because it’s good personal practice when working remotely to take breaks, go for walks, and change location.

Café Bretelles

How I found it: In 2018, I was the new kid in town, on the receiving end of invitations to coffee by kind and friendly expats in Strasbourg.
I vividly remember being invited to Bretelles the first time because I had only met 3/4 of the women once before; one of them was a stranger. Most were English teachers in one or more universities around Strasbourg. (As any foreigner quickly comes to learn, teaching English in Strasbourg is a pretty standard job to have around here.)
Anyway, I walked in and mumbled “bonjour” to the person working the counter (my French was only A2 on a good day). The group was clustered at a table in the back, laptops open and various specialty coffees interspersed between laptops, arms, and purses. As is so often the case when meeting other expats for the first time, the get-together was easy and smooth, with everyone ready to listen to one another and commiserate on shared challenges shared as Americans living in France.

There are two floors to this coffee shop, try to snag a window seat upstairs! However, make sure to bring a scarf or sweater in the winter. The windows upstairs (and France in general) tend to be quite drafty.
Oh My Goodness Coffee Shop
What I love about it: It’s huge and it’s easy to blend in and carve out a little bubble for yourself – as long as you don’t arrive during high tide (lunchtime or Sunday brunch).

It’s got two floors (or one if you count the French way and see the ground floor as level 0) and dozens of seating options including armchairs, benches, couches, and normal chairs and tables. This is an especially great spot if you’ve just arrived by bus and just need to park yourself somewhere to decompress and charge up your electronics.

How I found it: When I moved here in July 2018, I enrolled in an intensive French course at the Strasbourg Alliance Francaise. I was happy with my choice of French language school (I entered A2 and completed the course with B2 after three months). And, I was fortunate to have this coffee shop right nearby, making it perfect for post-class coffee runs.

Coffee Stub is a wonderful place to work because you can tuck yourself into the back corner of the shop (not visible from the street) and get some work done. But, they don’t allow laptops during lunch hours or on Sundays. Makes sense, if you think about it! The staff are kind and multi-lingual.

BLOOM Café
How I found it: I can’t remember how it ended up happening, but somehow through Instagram, I ended up connecting with three wonderful women travel bloggers. Sophie Nadeau, Founder of Solo Sophie, Susanna “Sooz” Kelly-Shankar, Founder of Curiosity Saves Travel, and Christina Guan, Founder of Happy to Wander were traveling through Alsace together documenting the Christmas markets for their channels. They kindly invited me to have brunch with them during one morning in Strasbourg.

Honestly, I have never had good service here, even after adjusting for the discrepancy between American and French standards of customer standards. The last time was also the last straw, when my partner and I stood in front of the outdoor menu for over 20 minutes and were ignored by staff even after trying to ask for a seat and others who arrived after us without a reservation were seated before us. The food is objectively great and super Instagrammable, but so is the coffee and cake at What the Cake, which is just a few steps away.
Le Café Potager

How I found it: A wonderful friend and longtime Strasbourg resident introduced me to this place. I instantly fell in love with everything about it. It has fabulous specialty coffee, delicious homemade food, incredible carrot cake and cheesecake, and a warm ambiance.

The wonderfulness of this place is in its functionality. It has a cute little terrace situated just next to the tram tracks, which captures the mid-sized European vibe when a tram trundles by.
Conversely, you have a cozy, light wood interior with two rooms, one serving as a more social gathering place and a back area adorned with little plant sketches. I have worked in the latter several times and found it peaceful and productive, if a little bit cramped.
Belles Rencontres d’Omnino (“Omnino” to locals)

How I found it: I met a couple of women who adore good coffee and met them at the “Belles Rencontres” location (at the address listed above).

Omnino has three different locations spread throughout the city. The one closes to the train station is “Le Kiosque d’Omnino,” the one in the city center is “L’Escabeau d’Omnino,” and the one with proper seating is the Krutenau location. The others are more grab-to-go by design, but the quality of the coffee is excellent.
Le Quai 67
How I found it: I walked past this for the first time in 2019 or 2020, but the first time I tried it wasn’t until 2023. What a loss on my part! This café is one of my favorites because coffee, food, and service are top-notch. Plus, the fact that it’s so out of the way means that it’s a truly local vibe. Score!

Nomad Cafe & Boutique
How I found it: I’ve lived in the Neudorf neighborhood! This place is truly a “hidden gem” in the sense that even by talking about it on this blog, it’s unlikely that it will ever be overrun with tourists the way some of the other places can be, simply by it being quite out of the way. However, if you arrive by bus and are up for a short walk, you can easily experience this super-nice spot.

Nomad’s owner also recently opened a new location in the city center, Le Petit Nomad, searchable as “Nomad Café Strasbourg Centre.” Their current operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, closed Sunday and Monday.
BCBG Café
Address: 43 Route du Polygone, 67100 Strasbourg
How I found it: This place is so special to me, because it was the place I ate at right before visiting the apartment that would become our new home in Strasbourg from 2022 onward. I distinctly remember the day because it was one of those sunny days in Strasbourg that is so perfectly temperate and beautiful; you just want to stand under the sunlight and take a few deep breaths.
Anyway, it’s got incredible brunch options (like, real brunch options, none of this baguette-and-jam plus some granola stuff that French places so often try to pass off as brunch). I’m talking pancakes with fresh fruit and homemade (at least I think it was homemade?) chantilly, open-faced avocado toast with the works, and more. Their coffee isn’t anything to write home about, but the food more than makes up for it.

How I found it: Now that I live in Neudorf, I regularly enter the city from a different direction than I did when we lived over by Les Halles, and suddenly, I was noticing this really classy, nice-looking spot. It’s funny the things that you notice when the context is only slightly changed.

How I found it: A friend I met while at an event to promote Leaf Tea (not a coffee spot, but a must-visit spot if you like bubble tea!) invited me to this inconspicuous little spot on Grand Rue. If you’ve visited Strasbourg before and wandered around the city center, there’s a good chance that, like me, you have also passed this little spot multiple times without realizing it!

Patisserie Valentin
Address: 101 Rte du Polygone, 67100 Strasbourg
How I found it: Tried to get my hair cut at the nearby (and very cutely-named) Tête a l’Hair only to be blocked by a barrage of grandmas, so I wound up settling in for a coffee and impromptu work session here. Pro tip: Do not attempt to go and get your hair cut without an appointment on a Friday afternoon in a quiet neighborhood.

The café is part of a social enterprise whose mission is to employ and train people with mental and cognitive disabilities in ordinary restaurant jobs, from the kitchen and counter to table service. Café Joyeux itself is a business rather than an association, but it is wholly owned by the nonprofit Source de Joie endowment fund, with profits supporting its employment and training mission.

How I found it: I met a friend of mine here for coffee recently and it felt like ordering at a bakery in a Netflix movie set in France. Everything is so deliciously fresh, the workers were much warmer than I associate with French boulangeries, and the coffee was delicious.

How I found it: I’d seen it while eating nearby at Tzatzi (highly recommend if you like Greek tapas vibes) and had been meaning to try it out. A friend of mine who knows I love trying different spots sent me a photo of her drink and cake. Pretty soon after that, I dragged my husband over on a Saturday for a sit in the summer sun on the terrace.

How I found it: This was one of those rare, delightful finds — coming out of a Pilates class led by my friend and Strasbourg local, @stephinpractice, we were actually on our way to Dude Café or Café Potager when she noticed this one looked new (and was right around the corner from the studio, The Haaus). We sat down, made ourselves at home, and really enjoyed the delicious coffee and homemade pastries. I can personally recommend the carrot cake muffin!

I am keeping them in the event that someone comes across this blog and recognizes one of the closed locations as one of “their” old spots. Although it’s a little sad, I always like to know the status of my old haunts.
