thai square restaurant in Strasbourg, France

The food in Strasbourg, France is, quite frankly, incredible for such a little place. Even if you count the people in the suburbs, the city population barely cracks 300,000 people. But, foot by square foot, the capital of the Grand Est region truly packs a delicious punch.

It’s not just local specialties either, though there is plenty of the renowned tarte flambée (locally known as Flammkuchen or Flammekueche), choucroute (appoximately 6 lbs of meat ft cabbage – it’s great I swear!), bretzels, and the like. In between all of these heavy meals though, you might just want to try something different.

Take, for example, Thai food in Strasbourg

When I moved to this charming little city, I moved in two floors above Thai Square, a Thai restaurant that quickly became one of “those places.” You know what I mean. The ones you always say you’re going to try or visit as you rush past on your way to one thing or another. In any case, it grew into a running joke with me and my boyfriend. Eventually, I just said enough was enough, now was the time to try it.

This salad was TO DIE FOR. Seriously, I have never eaten a more light salad that made my taste buds sing

Naturally, this meant the first time we tried Thai food in Strasbourg – it was raining

This isn’t exactly a huge deal since Strasbourg has exactly two weathers offered at a 90/10 ratio: Apathy Gray Skies with Perpetual Chances of Showers and Joyful Blue Sunshine. We took seats outside since my partner is/was (he’s been trying to quit, okay?) a smoker. But, the inside looked so cozy and cute that I’m determined to go back when restaurants open again and dine inside. Anyway. We took our seats… and were promptly informed that the restaurant, Thai Square, was about to close. At that, we immediately sprang up and apologized. The waiter did that awkward dance with us insisting it was okay for us to stay if we just wanted “menus.”

Don’t be fooled by the perspective – the bowl is deep and the portion more than satisfactory

To repay his kindness, I made a concerted effort to enunciate our order – and ordered incorrectly

This gave us another reason to come back a second time. During lunchtime in France, menus are often offered as a two-part special. For example, you can choose an appetizer and an entrée, or the entrée and the dessert. But, if you want all three courses, the price of the menu increases slightly. Of course, we’d agreed that we wanted to try all three. But, rapid French still unnerves me sometimes, so when the waiter asked a clarifying question, I blurted out “oui” without thinking. Turns out, he asked if we wanted just the appetizer and the entrée. Dammit.

Deep-fried dough to dip into chocolate?! Um YES PLEASE.

Fortunately, the first experience with just the appetizer and the entrée was so delicious that we were back within a couple of weeks for a second round. Now, I’m not sure how authentic the food is since I haven’t been to Thailand yet. But, it is indisputably delicious and flavorful, the type of food you want to eat slowly and savor. If all Thai food in Strasbourg is like Thai Square, I can’t wait to continue my culinary explorations.
