Best Coffee in Strasbourg Guide Hero

Every city has a repertoire of coffee shops, but this guide will help visitors and newcomers alike discover the best coffee shops in Strasbourg.

Whether you’ve come to marvel at the gravity-defying Neo-Gothic cathedral, embark on a leisurely tour of the Route des Vins, or get in the holiday spirit at the annual Marché de Nöel.

No matter your reason for visiting, at some point in the day, you’re going to be tired and slightly hungry, and on the hunt for a nice coffee in Strasbourg.

Or, maybe you’re a longtime resident of Strasbourg looking for some new ideas for your next rendez-vous with friends.

I’ll also include notes on logistics such as opening hours and which places are nice to work from based on my experiences to date.

A quick aside on working out of coffee shops in Strasbourg

I do follow a self-imposed common courtesy rule, which is to avoid working from coffee shops during lunch hours (12:00-2:00 pm). I do this because high-traffic hours are when these places make the most of their money, typically by offering a menu de jour.

Many of them don’t have very large interiors, and it can be tough to concentrate during the lunch rush anyway. I also try to limit my visits to around 2.5 hours because it’s good personal practice when working remotely to take breaks, go for walks, and change location.

So, whether you’re a tourist fresh out of the giant, dome-shaped train station looking for somewhere to get your bearings while waiting for your hotel check-in hours to start, looking for a new place to try with a visiting friend or family member, a remote or hybrid worker looking for a nice space in which to get down to business, or simply want to start your day with a handcrafted latte, you’re certain to be delighted by one of the many options in Strasbourg, France.

Café Bretelles

Cafe Bretelles is a great place to go for coffee in Strasbourg. They have two locations, one in Krutenau and one in Petite France

How I found it: In 2018, I was the new kid in town, on the receiving end of invitations to coffee by kind and friendly expats in Strasbourg.

I vividly remember being invited to Bretelles the first time because I had only met 3/4 of the women once before; one of them was a stranger. Most were English teachers in one or more universities around Strasbourg. (As any foreigner quickly comes to learn, teaching English in Strasbourg is a pretty standard job to have around here.)

Anyway, I walked in and mumbled “bonjour” to the person working the counter (my French was only A2 on a good day). The group was clustered at a table in the back, laptops open and various specialty coffees interspersed between laptops, arms, and purses. As is so often the case when meeting other expats for the first time, the get-together was easy and smooth, with everyone ready to listen to one another and commiserate on shared challenges shared as Americans living in France.

Insider tip: There are two floors to this coffee shop, try to snag a window seat upstairs! However, make sure to bring a scarf or sweater in the winter. The windows upstairs (and France in general) tend to be quite drafty.

Oh My Goodness Coffee Shop

Oh My Goodness is one of the most popular coffee spots in Strasbourg

What I love about it: It’s huge and it’s easy to blend in and carve out a little bubble for yourself – as long as you don’t arrive during high tide (lunchtime or Sunday brunch).

It’s got two floors (or one if you count the French way and see the ground floor as level 0) and dozens of seating options including armchairs, benches, couches, and normal chairs and tables. This is an especially great spot if you’ve just arrived by bus and just need to park yourself somewhere to decompress and charge up your electronics.

Where to find Oh My Goodness Coffee Shop: Five minutes away from Etoile Bourse (by foot)

Coffee Stub

Coffee Stub is a great place to have a coffee in Strasbourg, located near Quai des Bateliers

How I found it: When I moved here in July 2018, I enrolled in an intensive French course at the Strasbourg Alliance Francaise. I was happy with my choice of French language school (I entered A2 and completed the course with B2 after three months). And, I was fortunate to have this coffee shop right nearby, making it perfect for post-class coffee runs.

Location: Kruteneau neighborhood, by Gallia tram stop

Hours of operation for Coffee Stub:

Monday: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Tuesday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Thursday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Saturday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Sunday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Address: 12 Quai des Pêcheurs, 67000 Strasbourg

Insider tip: Coffee Stub is a wonderful place to work because you can tuck yourself into the back corner of the shop (not visible from the street) and get some work done. But, they don’t allow laptops during lunch hours or on Sundays. Makes some sort of sense, if you think about it! Look for a little sign posted somewhere, or simply ask! The staff are kind and multi-lingual.

BLOOM Café

How I found it: I can’t remember how it ended up happening, but somehow through Instagram, I ended up connecting with three wonderful women travel bloggers. Sophie Nadeau, Founder of Solo Sophie, Susanna “Sooz” Kelly-Shankar, Founder of Curiosity Saves Travel, and Christina Guan, Founder of Happy to Wander were traveling through Alsace together documenting the Christmas markets for their channels. They kindly invited me to have brunch with them during one morning in Strasbourg.

Location: Petite France

Hours of operation for BLOOM Café:

Monday: Closed

Tuesday: Closed

Wednesday: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Thursday: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Friday: 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM

Saturday: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Sunday: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Address: 2 Place des Meuniers, 67000 Strasbourg

Insider tip: Honestly, I have never had good service here, even after adjusting for the discrepancy between American and French standards of customer standards. The last time was also the last straw, when my partner and I stood in front of the outdoor menu for over 20 minutes and were ignored by staff even after trying to ask for a seat and others who arrived after us without a reservation were seated before us. The food is objectively great and super Instagrammable, but so is the coffee and cake at What the Cake, which is just a few steps away.

What the Cake

What the Cake is a nice coffee spot located in Petite France

How I found it: As I mentioned in the above BLOOM Café section, What the Cake is a stone’s throw from BLOOM, and BLOOM’s service leaves a lot to be desired.

Also, What the Cake has such a cute and fun name, I’d have ended up here eventually! The coffee is secondary to the cakes here, but unfortunately, I always eat the cake before I remember to take a photo, so you’ll have to take my word for it 😉 Be sure to go hungry though because the cake fills you up like a proper meal.

Location: Petite France

Hours of operation for What the Cake: This establishment is temporarily closed (as of January 8, 2023). I will update this section once more information becomes available!

Address: 51 Rue du Fossé-des-Tanneurs, 67000 Strasbourg

Insider tip: The people watching from the first floor (second floor if you’re counting in French) is great.

Le Café Potager

How I found it: A wonderful friend and longtime Strasbourg resident introduced me to this place. I instantly fell in love with everything about it. It has fabulous specialty coffee, delicious homemade food, incredible carrot cake and cheesecake, and a warm ambiance.

Location: City Center – Place Kleber

Hours of operation for Le Café Potager:

Monday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Tuesday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Wednesday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Thursday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Friday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Saturday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Sunday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Address: 5 rue des Francs – Bourgeois, 67000 Strasbourg

Insider tip: The wonderfulness of this place is in its functionality. It has a cute little terrace situated just next to the tram tracks, which captures the mid-sized European vibe when a tram trundles by.

Conversely, you have a cozy, light wood interior with two rooms, one serving as a more social gathering place and a back area adorned with little plant sketches. I have worked in the latter several times and found it peaceful and productive, if a little bit cramped.

Le Quai 67

How I found it: I walked past this for the first time in 2019 or 2020, but the first time I tried it wasn’t until 2023. What a loss on my part! This café is one of my favorites because coffee, food, and service are top-notch. Plus, the fact that it’s so out of the way means that it’s a truly local vibe. Score!

Le Quai 67 makes delicious soup bread bowls.

Location: Gare neighborhood

Hours: 8 AM – 6 PM Monday through Friday, closed on weekends.

Insider tip: Within easy walking distance of the train station.

Address: 14 Boulevard de Nancy, 67000

Nomad Cafe & Boutique

If you're near the Neudorf neighborhood, Nomad Cafe is a great coffee spot

How I found it: I’ve lived in the Neudorf neighborhood! This place is truly a “hidden gem” in the sense that even by talking about it on this blog, it’s unlikely that it will ever be overrun with tourists the way some of the other places can be, simply by it being quite out of the way. However, if you arrive by bus and are up for a short walk, you can easily experience this super-nice spot.

Location: Neudorf

Hours of operation for Nomad Cafe & Boutique: 9 AM – 6 PM Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday.

Address: 80 Rte du Polygone, 67100 Strasbourg

Insider tip: Nomad offers delicious fresh, vegetarian meals for lunch and brunch on the weekends. Follow their @nomad.cafeboutique on Instagram and be sure to check their stories if you’re in the area; all of the most up-to-date information can be found there!

BCBG Café

How I found it: This place is so special to me, because it was the place I ate at right before visiting the apartment that would become our new home in Strasbourg from 2022 onward. I distinctly remember the day because it was one of those sunny days in Strasbourg that is so perfectly temperate and beautiful; you just want to stand under the sunlight and take a few deep breaths.

Anyway, it’s got incredible brunch options (like, real brunch options, none of this baguette-and-jam plus some granola stuff that French places so often try to pass off as brunch). I’m talking pancakes with fresh fruit and homemade (at least I think it was homemade?) chantilly, open-faced avocado toast with the works, and more. Their coffee isn’t anything to write home about, but the food more than makes up for it.

Location: Neudorf

Hours of operation for BCBG Café:

Monday: Closed

Tuesday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Wednesday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Thursday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Friday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Sunday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Address: 43 Route du Polygone, 67100 Strasbourg

Insider tip: This place is an easy 10-minute walk from the bus stop.

Ôjourd’hui

How I found it: Now that I live in Neudorf, I regularly enter the city from a different direction than I did when we lived over by Les Halles, and suddenly, I was noticing this really classy, nice-looking spot. It’s funny the things that you notice when the context is only slightly changed.

Location: Near Etoile Bourse (five minutes walking from the bus stop)

Hours of operation for Ôjourd’hui:

Monday: Closed

Tuesday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Thursday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Saturday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Sunday: 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Address: 11 Rue de la Brigade Alsace-Lorraine, 67000 Strasbourg

Insider tip: The pastries are exquisite and the background music is light and jazzy, if you like that sort of vibe (I do!). That said, the main window receives unobstructed sunlight in the afternoons, causing the entire place to feel similar to a sauna. If you like working in cozy, slightly-too-hot environments, this will be the place for you. If not, best to visit in the mornings before the lunch rush.

Cafés du Monde

How I found it: A friend I met while at an event to promote Leaf Tea (not a coffee spot, but a must-visit spot if you like bubble tea!) invited me to this inconspicuous little spot on Grand Rue. If you’ve visited Strasbourg before and wandered around the city center, there’s a good chance that, like me, you have also passed this little spot multiple times without realizing it!

Location: City center, near Petite France

Hours of operation for Cafés du Monde:

Monday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Tuesday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Wednesday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Thursday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Friday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Saturday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Sunday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Address: 116 Grand’Rue, 67000 Strasbourg

Insider tip: This is truly a coffee connoisseur type of place; the baristas can talk coffee at a professional level and are extremely passionate about it. At the risk of mixing metaphors, I have to say that if you’re a coffee buff, this cozy, under-the-radar place will definitely be your cup of tea.

Patisserie Valentin

How I found it: Tried to get my hair cut at the nearby (and very cutely-named) Tête a l’Hair only to be blocked by a barrage of grandmas, so I wound up settling in for a coffee and impromptu work session here. Pro tip: Do not attempt to go and get your hair cut without an appointment on a Friday afternoon in a quiet neighborhood.

Location: Neudorf

Hours of operation for Patisserie Valentin

Monday7:30 AM–6:30 PM
Tuesday7:30 AM–6:30 PM
Wednesday7:30 AM–6:30 PM

Saturday7:30 AM–6:30 PM
SundayClosed

Address: 101 Rte du Polygone, 67100 Strasbourg

Insider tip: Their cookies are wonderful!

And, that’s a wrap! It’s very possible I haven’t covered everything because I’m only including a list of the places I’ve personally been to. But, I do try to update this list regularly! That being said, please be sure to double-check opening hours on Google Maps to be more sure that your desired location will be open during your visit.

Coffee Shop Archives

Below is the beginning of a list of places that were formerly on this list, but have since closed. I am keeping them in the event that someone comes across this blog and recognizes one of the closed locations as one of “their” old spots; personally, I always like to know the status of my old haunts.

Au 5 Coffee Shop – permanently closed as of 2022

Location: Near Place Kleber

Hours: 9 AM-7 PM Monday-Friday, 9:30 AM-7 PM Saturday, 10 AM-6 PM Sunday

Insider tip: Quiet and tucked away, this is the place to go if you want to feel like you’re hidden away in the center of the city

Address: 5 Rue du Vieux Seigle, 67000 Strasbourg

And that’s a wrap for now! I have no doubt that this list will keep growing, but I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of some of where to find some of the best coffee in Strasbourg.

  1. Hi Claire. I imagine you must have been buzzing around after all that coffee. Your Dad has to try the chocolate and Guinness. He may not want to come back.
