I think there are few greater trials in life that we can choose to undertake compared with moving far away for another person. At that point, you’re really moving for an idea, for the sense of aliveness that comes with taking a risk and realizing that what you’ve actually done is bet on yourself.Continue Reading

As the year winds down and 2026 comes barreling around the corner, I’m braced for something I thought I’d achieved acceptance of: uncertainty.  In the years I’ve been in France, I’ve written about the terrible, existential angst that uncertainty has wrought many times, often trying to separate what angst wasContinue Reading

The Best Time to See the Strasbourg Magnolias

It may not make the typical list of the best things to do in Strasbourg, and that’s exactly why the Strasbourg magnolia season should be on your radar.  Every year, Strasbourg tests the bounds of human (OK, fine, my) sanity with one of the dreariest, most depressing winters I’ve everContinue Reading

When I planned to travel to Croatia in 2024, it was with one goal in mind: to enjoy some peace and quiet with my new husband. While not our official honeymoon, we planned a somewhat spontaneous trip to Split and the island of Solta toward the end of September toContinue Reading

The Baden-Baden, Germany Christmas market makes a picturesque place even more so during the holiday season. Nestled at the edge of the Black Forest, Baden-Baden is perhaps best known as a spa town thanks to its natural thermal baths, but after visiting in November 2024, I found the Christmas marketsContinue Reading

Meet The Millennial Abroad

Claire Naughton

Claire Naughton

Hi! I'm a current US expat and longtime traveler based in Strasbourg, France. I'm here because I fell in love with a Frenchie, and I think and write a lot about the identity implications of loving someone so much that you make lasting changes for them. But that's just part of my story. I have deep backpacker-adventure roots and love hiking and sports, including running, horseback riding, and soccer. In recent years, I've also developed a taste for slow city travel and never take for granted an opportunity to explore a new place and indulge in a delicious meal. Finally, I am also an enormous animal enthusiast and adore opportunities to safely and responsibly interact with them. Nothing puts this complex and beautiful world we all share more into perspective than being in nature.
